Design Inspiration at the 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show: A Florist’s Perspective

Attending the 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show was an unforgettable experience, reinforcing just how significant this event is to the floral community. Did you know that this show has been around for 196 years? It’s the longest-running festival in the USA! Not even COVID-19 could stop this floral celebration—it simply moved outdoors to South Philly to keep the tradition alive.

As the nation’s largest and longest-running horticultural event, the Flower Show attracts over 250,000 visitors annually, serving as a hub for florists, designers, and enthusiasts to exchange ideas and celebrate floral artistry. The show is organized by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), which was founded in 1827 by a group of farmers, botanists, and nurserymen. The first-ever public show was held at the Masonic Hall on Chestnut Street in 1829 as a one-day exhibition of flowers, fruits, and plants. Wow—have things changed! Today, the Flower Show is an immersive, multi-day event featuring jaw-dropping floral displays, educational exhibits, and cutting-edge floral trends.

2025 Theme: Gardens of Tomorrow

This year’s theme, “Gardens of Tomorrow,” invited exhibitors to envision a future where human innovation enhances the beauty and resilience of nature. The entrance garden, “Futura Florentia,” was a breathtaking display featuring massive flowering trees, cascading water features, and futuristic floral sculptures, setting the tone for the innovative exhibits that followed.

One of the standout exhibitors was Schaffer Designs, whose installation captured a growing movement in modern living. Their display highlighted how people are leaving city life behind for a more urban-lifestyle fusion, where outdoor spaces, gardening, and homegrown food are becoming increasingly important. Their work reflected how florists and event planners can integrate sustainability and urban gardening trends into floral design and home landscaping.

The Buzz: Honeybees and Their Impact

One of the most eye-opening aspects of the show was the presence of honeybee hives nestled within floral displays. These hives served as a reminder that without bees, there would be no harvest. The Flower Show emphasized the critical role of pollinators in our environment, and I left feeling more inspired than ever to incorporate bee-friendly florals into my designs at Blooms Social.

Getting to the Flower Show: A Must for Garden Lovers

The Philadelphia Flower Show is such a major event that garden clubs from all over the Tri-State area rent buses to bring members—and many of these buses sell out within minutes! If you’re lucky, you might even score a seat at the iconic Reading Terminal Market for a bite to eat before diving into the show.

The Flower Show is also known for its incredible Marketplace and Makers Market, featuring curated plants, accessories, and locally crafted gifts. Vendors like Plant Haus Market offered unique plant varieties and hands-on workshops, making the event even more interactive for plant lovers.
